The Maxima has been fully redesigned for 2004. It now rides on the same underpinnings as the well-received Nissan Altima. This year’s Maxima is longer, wider and more powerful than the previous version.
2004 Nissan Maxima Owners Manual – Now built in America instead of Japan, Maxima shares its basic design with Nissan’s slightly smaller, less-expensive Altima. Interior dimensions change little, but Maxima gains 2.9 inches in wheelbase, 2 inches in height and overall length, and about 200 lb. It comes in Sporty SE and luxury-oriented SL models. A 3.5-liter V6 is again the only engine; it has 5 hp more than the previous Maxima’s and 20 more than Altima’s version. The SE comes with a 6-speed manual transmission. Optional on SE and standard on SL is a 5-speed automatic with manual shift gate. Antilock 4-wheel disc brakes, head-protecting curtain side airbags, and front torso side airbags are standard. Antiskid/traction control is optional with automatic transmission.
